چکیده

Osteoarthritis is a slowly evolving degenerative disease affecting cartilage and bone. Like other chronic non-infectious diseases, its aetiology appears to be multifactorial and therefore preventable by risk factor modification. One ofthe best studied potentially modifiable risk factors is obesity. While this review will use the concepts of adiposity and weight interchangeably, it should be recognised that these are biologically different phenomena, one representing an increase in adipose tissue and the other representing increased force across weight bearing joints. Risk factors for osteoarthritis are different, depending on which joint is affected.' Knee injuries, like those sustained in football, predispose to knee osteoarthritis but obviously not to hand osteoarthritis. Some factors may have purely local effects, whereas others have systemic effects. The effects of weight (or adiposity) may be both local and systemic.

Overweight: advancing our understanding of its impact on the knee and the hip.

I n their study, Reijman et al (see page 158) report findings that show an association between an increased body mass index (BMI) and greater risk of both incident knee osteoarthritis and knee osteoarthritis progression, but no association between an increased BMI and risk of either incident or progressive hip osteoarthritis. These results confirm what previous studies—that is, studies that wer...

A position advocated by many of us is “Just War.” I...

Why does the central nervous system not regenerate after injury?

A major problem for neuroscientists and clinicians is why the central nervous system shows ineffective regeneration after injury. Injured peripheral nerve fibers reform their connections, whereas those in injured spinal cord never re-grow. Insights into the mechanisms for repair and restoration of function after spinal cord injury have been obtained by experiments showing that injured nerve cel...

Metabolic Syndrome as a Risk Factor for Osteoarthritis

In metabolic syndrome, the vast majority of these conditions are simultaneously present, and the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes rises. Besides, osteoarthritis or degen...
